One of Sandison’s victims said after he was convicted that she would only feel closure if he was ordered to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
And last night the woman’s brother branded the sentence “disgusting”.
He said: “We felt that the man should be locked up for the rest of his life, and this sentence in no way guarantees that.
“My sister had hoped that she would gain some closure via the sentencing, but this has spoiled that completely.
“The sentencing just does not reflect the severity of the crimes Sandison carried out, the judge’s decision is absolutely disgusting.
The victim’s brother added: “This does not give any justice to the victims, he was not 68 when he committed the crimes.
“We are talking about multiple rape here, and to downplay the severity of that because it happened years ago is sick.”
In late July a special sitting of the High Court had to be convened in Elgin because morbidly obese Sandison was physically incapable of travelling further afield.
Following the guilty verdict, Judge Lord Turnbull told the court that Sandison had “shown no hint of remorse” for his conduct.
Speaking to the Press and Journal last month, one of his victims voiced fears that Sandison may have preyed on others who had not come forward.
She said: “Something like this affects every part of your life. I tried to bury it for years but unfortunately it didn’t stay down, and I finally decided I was not going to let it lie.
“Hearing he was guilty meant I was believed, and it meant he was outed for what he is.”
