A man who tried to smuggle drugs into a north-east superjail has been locked up himself.
Michael Grover yesterday admitted handing over cannabis resin to an inmate of HMP Grampian, Peterhead on February 5 this year.
Peterhead Sheriff Court heard that Grover was seen by prison staff reaching into his trousers and handing over 10.4 grams of the resin during the visitation.
The inmate, who had to be removed for the drugs to be recovered, had attempted to conceal the cannabis – valued at £140 – in his mouth.
Grover’s defence agent, Keidra Morrison, said he accepted there was only one option the court had when it came to sentencing.
The 36-year-old is currently part-way through a prison sentence for another matter which will keep him in custody until December next year.
“Mr Grover accepts full responsibility – he knows it is completely unacceptable,” Ms Morrison added.
Sheriff Andrew Miller told him that his offence was “serious” despite the small quantity of drugs involved.
“Being concerned in the supply of any drug is a serious matter,” he said.
“I am satisfied only a sentence of imprisonment is appropriate in this matter.”
He imposed a six-month jail term, which will run consecutively to his current sentence.
HMP Grampian opened in March 2014 at a cost of about £150million.
But within weeks of opening, inmates had to be transferred to the Central Belt following a major riot.
