A woman who escaped the clutches of notorious killer Malcolm Webster has been convicted of careless driving.
Simone Banerjee was engaged the former nurse as police closed in on him for the murder of his first wife and the attempted murder of his second.
She was famously saved by an Osman Letter delivered by officers in 2008 – telling her that her life was in danger.
Yesterday, almost exactly eight years on from that day, Banerjee, 46, of Sunnyrock, Glenmore Road, Oban, appeared at the town’s sheriff court.
She admitted driving carelessly near Taynuilt on the A85 Oban-Perth road on August 24.
The court heard that she overtook two cars – one of which was an unmarked police vehicle.
She was fined £400 and had eight penalty points added to her licence.
Fiscal Eoin McGinty said: “Police officers were travelling in an unmarked vehicle.
“They were aware the vehicle behind them had to apply his brakes to create a space to allow the accused to get back in after overtaking.
“When they got into the straight section she overtook the unmarked police vehicle disregarding the double white lines.”
Banarjee’s agent, solicitor Richard Freeman, said: “She is a registered nurse and is also employed as a disability assessor.
“She requires to travel to Inverness Hospital and to Glasgow’s Jubilee Hospital.”
Webster, 55, was convicted of killing first wife Claire Morris in Aberdeenshire in 1994 by staging a car crash and setting fire to the vehicle with her inside.
Five years later, he tried to kill his second wife Felicity Drumm in the same way, but she survived a crash in New Zealand.
After returning to Britain in 2004, Webster tried to lure Banerjee into a bigamous marriage.
She met him at the Lorn and the Islands Hospital at Oban, where they both worked, and agreed to marry him in 2006.
She has since spoken about her lucky escape – and yesterday a glimpse of her life since Webster was put on trial and jailed emerged.
Mr Freeman added: “She has a partner of six years. Unfortunately, in January of this year, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer which has spread to his windpipe, he requires to undergo a complex operation at the Jubilee hospital on February 22.”
During Banarjee’s relationship with Webster he lied to her that he had cancer and even shaved his head and pretended he had undergone chemotherapy as part of the charade.
