Two men have been accused of dealing cannabis after they were found with four bars of the drug in Oban.
Geoffrey Gladwell, 53, of 2 Dun Bheag, Ruaig, Tiree, and John McLean, 55, of 13 Kinloss Court, Dunfermline, went on trial at Oban Sheriff Court yesterday.
They pleaded not guilty to being in possession of cannabis with intent to supply at a car park off Corran Brae, Oban on January 6.
Police officers were in the area of the car park as part of a drug investigation.
They told the court that after they searched the men they found Gladwell with four 3.5oz or 100gram bars of resin and McLean with £932 in cash.
PC Paul MacMillan said: “PC Danny MacBeth radioed me and informed me that a vehicle had turned up.
“I went to the car park and observed two men, McLean seated in the driver seat of a blue Audi and Gladwell standing near the passenger door with a rucksack on the ground beside him.
“I approached them both and could smell cannabis so informed them they were being detained under the misuse of drugs act.
“I searched Gladwell first. I found quite a substantial amount of what I believed to be cannabis resin.”
He said two of the bars of cannabis were found in Gladwell’s pocket and the other two in his rucksack.
When PC MacBeth searched McLean at Oban Police Station, he found £932 in cash.
On being questioned about the drugs, the court heard that Gladwell said the cannabis was for his personal use to take back to the island of Tiree with him.
McLean’s position was that he did not know about Gladwell’s cannabis, and that he had the cash because he was looking to buy a car and visit charity shops.
Specialist drug officer, DC John Hose, gave evidence that the four bars had a total potential street value of £1,120.
The trial was continued until August 16.
