A heartbroken north-east man caused a fracas at the airport after drunkenly booking flights to Ibiza to confront his girlfriend.
Dean Stewart had been with friends in Aberdeen when he and his girlfriend – who is on holiday on the island – got into an argument over the phone, and she suggested breaking up.
The 18-year-old decided to book last-minute flights to Ibiza on the phone, and turned up at Aberdeen International Airport drunk.
After kicking a “wet floor” warning sign, he was approached by two police officers and told to pick it up.
But Stewart, of 7 Logan Court, Elgin, refused and began shouting and swearing – despite the number of young families around.
Yesterday, he appeared from custody at Aberdeen Sheriff Court and admitted acting in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting, swearing and making threats.
The incident happened at about 5.30am on Wednesday.
Fiscal depute Laura Begg told the court that police officers Graeme McEwan and Christopher McKie confronted Stewart after he kicked over the sign, and asked him to pick it up.
She said: “He refused. The accused then began shouting and swearing towards the police officers. A number of young children were in the vicinity.
“He ran off towards the exit of the airport but was prevented from doing so by police officers. (He was) cautioned and arrested.”
Stewart also admitted trying to stop the officers put the handcuffs on him and obstructing them in their duty by shuffling and hitting out with his arms and legs.
Defence solicitor Graeme Murray said that “he and alcohol are not the best of friends”, adding Stewart had been “very emotional as a result of having too much to drink”.
He said: “(He) has been in custody since the early hours of Wednesday morning. He very much regrets his actions and knows his behaviour was totally inappropriate.
“Mr Stewart deeply regrets his behaviour and apologises. Mr Stewart’s girlfriend is currently on holiday in Ibiza. During the course of the evening there was an argument between them.”
He added during the call she suggested to “end the relationship”.
Mr Murray said: “Under the influence of alcohol he decided he was going to catch a flight to Ibiza.”
Stewart was described as having arrived at the airport with “effectively no luggage”.
Mr Murray added his client had recently been paid off from his job.
Sheriff Margaret Hodge said the “place and time” the incident took place gave her “some cause for concern”, and fined £340.
