Climate change campaigners picketed Moray Council yesterday to call for action to combat global warming.
Banners were hung in trees outside the authority’s Elgin headquarters while members of the group pressed home their views with councillors arriving to attend meetings.
Campaigners at the demonstration were inspired to act after watching the Extinction Rebellion protests in London.
Now they want the council to take action by joining the declaration from the Scottish Government that there is a “climate emergency” underway.
John Lardner, from Forres, said: “For decades individuals have been told to make changes on a personal level but the situation has continued to get worse.
“Individuals need to be supported by local government and national government who put in place policies. Everybody has got to recognise this is an emergency.”
Debbie Raymont, from Findhorn, said: “The climate is changing around us in Moray. I have seen the sea levels rise at Findhorn and I don’t think we’ve had a real winter with significant snowfall in the last 10 years. It’s not normal.”
