New food waste recycling coming into effect in Deeside

A new food waste recycling service comes into operation to around 12,000 households in Aberdeenshire’s Deeside area next week.

The changes in the Banchory, Torphins, Midmar, Aboyne, Tarland, Ballater and Braemar areas will come into effect on Monday.

Food waste containers along with information booklets are being delivered to homes.

The initiative is part of a rethink in the way recycling and waste is handled in Aberdeenshire and has been designed to help the region meet the Scottish Government’s zero waste target.

Kitchen caddies will be used along with free liners to make food waste easy and clean to store in homes.

The waste – which includes both cooked and uncooked food – will then to be put into a green outdoor caddy for kerbside collection.

Collections will take place on a weekly basis, with recycling pickups taking place on alternative weeks.

The Kincardine and Mearns area will be the next and final area to receive the new service in March 2015.
