An animated video showing precisely how investigators understand the Stonehaven derailment took place has been released.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has carried out an extensive inquiry into the fatal disaster at Carmont, on August 12 2020.
As part of their work to piece together the many factors which led to the accident, the RAIB created a computer-generated animation showing exactly how the derailment unfolded.
The short video displays what happened to each of the individual carriages of the train once it collided with a landslip and derailed.
It displays how the power car for the train, after hitting the parapet of the bridge, went into the air before landing on an embankment below.
The video also shows how the other carriages were sent hurtling along once they derailed.
Finally, the animation shows how the multiple carriages of the train end up once they came to a halt.
Two were left down the embankment next to the bridge, and another two ended up coming to a rest on top of another, which had overturned.
The RAIB has made a series of recommendations with the publication of its investigation into the tragic events at Carmont.
