A historic north-east country house will host to an outdoor adaptation of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It to mark 400 years since the Bard’s death.
The Folksy Theatre company is bringing the comedy, written in 1599, to Duff House tonight.
The property, which is considered one of the finest examples of a Georgian stately manor anywhere in the world, is building a reputation as an outdoor theatre venue.
Last month the grounds hosted a performance of Roald Dahl’s 1975 tale Danny the Champion of the World.
Now As You Like It, famous as the play which introduced the phrase “all the world’s a stage”, will be shown in front of the grand home.
Last night Kit Reid, senior interpretation manager at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “The audience will be able to follow the plot as it charts life, love, betrayal and death.
“Complete with iconic characters such as Rosalind and filled with some of Shakespeare’s well-known quotes and phrases, it’s the perfect introduction to his work.
“It’s also fitting that we are to welcome these performances during the year that marks 400 years on since his death.”
The contemporary re-telling of the Shakespearean tale follows the characters Rosalind and Orlando on their journey into the Forest of Arden. The play will include opportunities for audience interaction.
Folksy Theatre director Tom Hardwicke added: “Our production is set in a timeless bohemian forest of Arden. It is filled with fun and live music and we think it is the perfect tribute to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.”
The performance will run tonight from 6.15pm-9pm and tickets are available both online and on the door.
