Organisers at a popular Speyside car rally have seen their biggest crowd yet.

Nearly 5,000 people funnelled into the square in Grantown yesterday to marvel at the display of 450 vehicles for Motor Mania.

Brand new cars were on show next to vehicles nearly 100-years-old that had been lovingly restored.

Proud owners stood with their pride and joy to show interested spectators the work that had been done under the bonnet.

Committee member Robbie MacDonald was delighted fine weather had attracted a bumper crowd.

He said: “We can cater for 5,000 and we must have been pretty close to that. We have 500 butteries donated to us for the show and we had sold them all by the opening ceremony at noon.

“It’s an ever-increasing event. We try and make it better every year. It keeps on growing but it can’t physically grow much more because of the size of the town.”

As well as flash Bentley’s, Ferraris and Jaguars spectators were also attracted to an intriguing Vulcan Charabang bus. Away from the cars pipe bands and dancers added colour to the day.

The event, which is now in its 19th year, had only about 30 cars on display when it was first held. Last night it took about 15 minutes for the 450 vehicles to filter out of the square.

Mr MacDonald said: “We had a fantastic mix, some old ones going back to 1916 and some brand new ones from this year. We try to cater for young and old to make it special.”
