The first ever World Prawn Peeling Competition is one of the highlights of an exciting new food festival celebrating west Highland produce.
Launching in Mallaig Harbour tomorrow is the inaugural Taste the Wild festival.
Opening at 11am tomorrow and taking revellers dancing until the “wee” hours of Sunday morning, Taste the Wild is part of Scottish Food and Drink Fortnight.
Stallholders will fill the harbour-side highlighting the finest of Highland artisan producers.
The festival will also showcase the skill and finesse of a selection of top West Highland chefs with talks and demonstrations taking place in the fish market, introducing spectators to the art of butchery and seafood preparation plus much more.
The first ever World Prawn Peeling Competition will take place throughout the day, while fishing trips, a BBQ and children’s competitions will keep everyone entertained.
As one of the main commercial fishing ports on Scotland’s West Coast, Mallaig is a fitting location to hold The Big Fish Debate.
Hosted by Shirley Spear, chairwoman of the Scottish Food Commission, the panel will debate the controversial and current issues affecting Scotland’s fishing industry such as the impact Brexit may have on the sector.
Jak O’Donnell, ambassador of Taste the Wild and chef proprietor of The Sisters Restaurant, said: “I’m excited to be sitting on the Big Fish Debate panel among five key influencers in this industry.
“Fishing and food affects everyone in one way or another, so I encourage you to come along and find out more about it.”
A “Scran and Dram” dinner and ceilidh will see the festival off in style, offering a truly one-off dining experience, spotlighting the outstanding chefs who know and showcase this produce every day.
