Motorists are being warned to expect road closures and delays as work gets underway to safeguard the future of Skye Bridge and make the A87 safer.

The project, which involves replacing drainage pipes beneath the bridge, forms part of a £1.25million investment in the road infrastructure on the Hebridean island.

Resurfacing work will also be undertaken at three locations on the Kyle to Uig route to improve road safety.

Work will begin next Wednesday on resurfacing 0.8 miles of the trunk road to the north of Broadford Cemetery.

It will be carried out between 7am and 7pm on weekdays only until Friday September 30 and there will be a convoy system in operation during working hours.

Maintenance work on Skye Bridge is to be undertaken on weekdays between Monday October 3 and Friday October 14 from 7am to 6pm.

A lane closure will be in place on the bridge during the work.

Overnight resurfacing work is planned on a 0.9-mile stretch at Ard Dorch on the same dates between 7pm and 7am Monday to Friday nights.

The road will be closed, but traffic will be allowed to pass through the closure approximately hourly or when it is safe to do so.

And resurfacing of a one-mile section to the north of Kingsburgh is planned for overnight on Monday to Friday nights between Monday October 17 and Friday 28 October 28 from 7pm to 7am.

The road will be closed overnight with traffic allowed through hourly.

Bear Scotland’s north west representative Eddie Ross said: “The resurfacing works will upgrade the carriageway at the three locations, and the bridge maintenance on Skye Bridge will ensure it functions at a safe operational standard for years to come.

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption as much as possible during the programme of works, such as ensuring that no weekend night time working takes place at any of the sites and making sure that local access is maintained during the night time closures at Ard Dorch and north of Kingsburgh.

“We’ve also timed the works to take place outside the busy tourist season to limit any impact to the local economy.”

Mr Ross added that consultation for the schemes at Ard Dorch and north of Kingsburgh were ongoing and he said they would publish final dates and times once they had been confirmed.
