The father of former Highland MP and Chief Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander has called for one of his son’s flagship policies to be extended.
Di Alexander, the chairman of Lochaber Housing Association, was appointed by the Scottish Government to head-up its Rural Fuel Poverty Task Force.
In the group’s report yesterday, Mr Alexander Snr recommended extending a UK Government-backed petrol and diesel discount in rural areas so that it also covers domestic fuels.
Di Alexander’s son Danny, the former Liberal Democrat MP for Inverness, introduced the 5p-a-litre discount at the petrol pumps in the islands in 2012 while he was key figure in the former coalition government.
He then won approval from the European Commission to extend it to 17 mainland communities three years later.
In his report, Mr Alexander Snr said it should now be expanded to cover domestic oil and liquefied petroleum gas “wherever there is a market supply failure” with fewer than four completely independent suppliers in the area.
It was one of more than 50 recommendations made in the task force’s report into tackling fuel poverty.
