Poilice in the Highlands have issued security advice to householders ahead on the clocks going back this weekend.
They said darker nights make it easier for thieves to target property and urged residents to keep their homes safe during the winter months.
Inverness Area Commander Chief Inspector Ian Graham said: “We are lucky to live in a community with relatively low crime levels, however it’s important we don’t become complacent.
“In most cases thieves will be trying doors in the hope they find one unlocked, so please don’t give them a head start.
“Simple and inexpensive devices such as timer switches on lights and radios to make it look as if your home is occupied when you’re away can be excellent deterrents, in addition to external sensor lighting around your house and garden.
“Get into the habit of securing all doors and windows when you leave and before you go to bed, making sure all valuables inside are kept out of sight.”
“Make sure all garden tools and ladders are stored securely when not being used, it’s worth investing in high quality sturdy locks for sheds, garages and outbuildings.”
“It’s a good idea to make a note of all makes, models and serial numbers of expensive items in your home and garage to increase the chances of items being recovered if you’re unfortunate enough to be a victim of theft.”
“By coupling these straightforward practices with remaining vigilant and reporting any potentially suspicious behaviour, you will improve the security of both your home and the wider community.”
