Motorists travelling on the busiest road to Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross will soon face six weeks of disruption for essential bridge repairs.
Works will start on upgrading Dornie New Bridge on the A87 Shiel Bridge-Broadford road from December 2.
Aluminium parapets will be upgraded along both sides of the bridge and safety barriers will be improved as part of a £450,000 investment.
The work will take place between 8am and 6pm each day but, to avoid disruption during the festive period, it will be suspended from December 24 until January 8 before resuming for another three weeks.
The bridge will remain open to motorists throughout the works with temporary traffic lights in place for the safety of the teams and road users.
The parapet works will be done sequentially and, during the works, the footpath adjacent to the parapet being replaced will be closed, however pedestrians will still have access across the bridge using the footpath on the opposite side.
Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative said: “The £450,000 investment for upgrading the existing parapets on the Dornie Bridge will help prolong the life of the structure and ensure it continues to function safely for years to come.
“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption to motorists as much as possible by carrying out the works over the winter when traffic flows are generally quieter on the bridge, as well as ensuring we avoid working during the festive period.
“We encourage motorists to allow some extra time for their journeys and plan ahead by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date journey information.”
