Work on Oban’s new £30million high school is on target, and pupils have been helping to choose the colour scheme of the paint and carpets.
An update on the building project was given to councillors at the Oban Lorn and the Isles area committee meeting on Friday.
The new school, under construction next to the existing building, is due to be completed in March 2018 after work started in May.
Mike Casey, school project development manager, said the project was making good progress. The foundations have been completed and the erecting of a steel frame is well under way.
Mr Casey said: “We have now got the roof steel work in place and are putting the roof onto that.
“There are five main staircases in the building.
“It will be a very easy building to circulate, unlike the current building which has been developed at a number of different stages.
“There has not been one reportable health and safety matter on site since the project started, which gives an idea of the safety measures in place.”
He added: “There has been a massive change on site in two months, good progress is being made on this project.”
Head teacher Peter Bain said: “Every time there is a decision taken about any aspect of the school, where it can be, it goes to the pupils. We have had pupil focus groups. For the last two weeks we have had hundreds of kids choosing colour schemes.
“They gave us colour samples, they weren’t allowed to have bright primary colours because of the nature of the building, but they had a choice of about 100 colours and have narrowed it down to four.
“The colour of the carpets have also been chosen by pupils.
“Every time there is the ability to have a choice we will take 10 classes from across the school, two from each year group, and they choose, not me.”
Councillor Elaine Robertson said: “I would like to say congratulations to all involved, it is so rare to see a project staying so close to time.”
