A section of the A9 Inverness to Thurso road has been shut this evening.
Police are currently in attendance at the scene of an ongoing incident between Latheron and Sordale.
They were called to the location just before 9.30pm.
The road has been closed in both directions.
A diversion is currently in place via the A99 Latheron to Wick road and the A882 Wick to Sordale route.
A police spokeswoman would not confirm if the incident involved a road traffic collision, but said that the A9 would be closed for “a little while”.
A police statement said: “The A9 is currently closed between Latheron and the junction with the A882 near Georgemas due to an ongoing incident.
“More details will be released when available.”
Fire teams are not at the scene, and the ambulance service is not available for comment.
UPDATE: Police have confirmed that a bomb squad were called to the scene after a suspicious package was found.
A police spokesman said: “Police are carrying out inquiries following the discovery of a package at a residential address in the Spital area of Caithness during the execution of a drug search warrant.
“The EOD are currently in attendance and are assessing the package.
“As a a precaution, a 100 metre (328 ft) cordon has been put in place which has resulted in the closure of the A9 between Latheron and Sordale. Diversions are in place via the A99 and A882.
“We would like to reassure the public that appropriate action is being taken.
“A 55 year old man has been arrested and charged in relation to drug offences.”
The road was reopened just before 1am.
