A Renault Clio and a silver-coloured Mercedes taxi collided around 4.20pm near the Napier Hill junction, on the brae past the Western Isles Hospital. The male driver of the Clio was taken to the near-by hospital but later died. A police spokeswoman said: “It was a low speed collision and it is thought the man suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.” No passengers were in the taxi and the driver was also treated at the accident and emergency department. The taxi driver suffered no serious injuries and he was later released from the hospital. The road – the main route to Back and Barvas – was blocked, creating lengthy queues during the evening rush hour. Later, traffic was allowed through in single file. Police officers and the local traffic warden were on scene to control traffic flow.
