Two north lifeboats were launched this afternoon to help a person experiencing “severe sea sickness” on board a yacht.
Thurso and Wick lifeboats went to the aid of the stricken Mohican 2 vessel which was overcome by tides in the Pentland Firth, three miles east of Stroma, after one of two crew members took ill.
A Shetland Coastguard spokesman said the alarm was raised at about 4.20pm by the second crew member, who could not maneuver the vessel properly in the strong tides.
Both lifeboat crews assisted and the Thurso lifeboat is currently towing the yacht back to Scrabster Harbour.
The spokesman said: “It’s not uncommon for something like this to happen, but on this occasion they issued a mayday and were in severe difficulty. They had one person down and did not have enough power to maneuver clear of the strong tides in the Pentland Firth.”
