Firefighters battling second wildfire in the Highlands

Firefighters in the Highlands are now battling a second wildfire with a two-mile front.

A fire service spokesman said that one appliance from Lairg was sent to Oykel Bridge at about 4.20pm this afternoon to deal with the huge wildfire.

Two appliances – one each from Ullapool and Aultbea – remain on scene at another large wildfire of similar size on the north side of Little Loch Broom, near Scoraig.

Resident Phil Wild, who lives on the opposite side of the loch, said the wildfire has a front of “about a couple of miles” and is spreading up the Beinn Ghoblach ridge towards homes at Scoraig.

At about 4pm, three appliances – one each from Portree, Applecross and Broadford – were sent to tackle a wildfire of about four acres in size, in the Peinmore area, east of Portree.

About 10 minutes later a single crew from Dunvegan was called to another wildfire at Kingsburgh, about 10 miles north of Portree.

The fire service spokesman said crews are “very busy” dealing with several wildfires due to a combination of the recent dry conditions and high winds.
