The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was badly injured when it was caught in a spring trap in Sutherland.
A member of the public alerted the charity after the cat was found on land near Movich Farm in Rogart.
An undercover inspector from the SSPCA’s Special Investigations Unit said: “Spring traps are legal and commonly used to control the population of certain target species such as stoats, weasels and grey squirrels.
“The traps however should be set in a natural or artificial tunnel to minimise the chance of killing or injuring any non-target animals, such as polecats, otters or in this case a domestic cat. There is legislation to adhere to when setting a spring trap in order for it to remain within the law.
“The cat involved, a black and white domestic short haired female cat, had no identification and wasn’t micro-chipped so we are appealing for an owner.”
The injured animal was found on January 26.
Anyone who has information on who may be setting this type of trap in the area is being urged to contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
