A knifeman jailed for the brutal attempted murder of his girlfriend had another six months added to his sentence yesterday for attacking a fellow inmate.
Terry Newlands, 23, from Dingwall, was sentenced to six years and nine months in 2015 for the attack on his partner Suzanne Matheson.
During the case, the High Court in Aberdeen heard how he repeatedly stabbed her in the neck while high on drugs, just missing her jugular.
Yesterday, Falkirk Sheriff Court heard that he was not long into his sentence at Polmont Young Offenders’ Institution in Stirlingshire when he attacked the other prisoner, Jacques Wilson.
Prosecutor Susan Campbell said the incident occurred at 11.40 am on August 1 while prisoners were out of their cells.
She said: “There was an argument between them, and the accused punched Mr Wilson on the head, causing him to be felled across the floor.
“Then he repeatedly kicked him as he lay on the ground until he was pulled off.”
Newlands pleaded guilty to the assault.
The court heard that Mr Wilson was uninjured.
Imposing the extra jail time, Sheriff Craif Caldwell told Newlands: “This was clearly a serious assault on another inmate, and it is particularly aggravated by the fact that you kicked him.”
