One person was left seriously injured last night following a crash between a lorry and two cars in an area of roadworks on the A9 Inverness-Perth road.
The collision happened on a 40mph stretch near Moor of Alvie, shortly before 3.20pm. Roadworks are being carried out over a five-mile stretch between Kincraig and Dalraddy to upgrade the road to a dual carriageway.
The road was closed in both directions between Lynchat and Aviemore for several hours and queues of traffic built up on both sides.
Last night at the scene, the front of a badly crumpled BMW Estate car could be seen facing a McPherson’s of Aberlour articulated lorry which had been travelling north.
Several pieces of plastic from the front bumper of the car could be seen scattered across the road surface.
A Renault Scenic car was also involved and sustained minor damage to the back right wheel.
Yesterday evening police released a statement on social media which read: “Police Scotland advise that the A9 is currently closed south of Aviemore due to a serious road traffic collision in the roadworks area there.”
A fire service spokesman said that firefighters helped assist paramedics with one casualty at the scene – but details of their injuries were unknown last night.
The spokesman added that four appliances – one each from Carrbridge, Aviemore, Kingussie and Grantown – attended the scene.
During the road closure, a diversion was put in place for drivers via the B9152 Granish-Lynchat road
Later in the afternoon, emergency services also attended a two vehicle crash further south on the A9 at Kindallachan, south of Pitlochry. The road was also closed for some time as a result.
On Wednesday, the A9 Inverness-Thurso road was closed for a short time following a three-car crash near the Glenmorangie Distillery.
On that occasion, there were no serious injuries.
