Two online funds set-up to aid the families of Eilidh MacLeod and Laura MacIntyre had raised a combined total of more than £50,000 within a day.
An appeal set up by Alan Anderson has raised more than £27,580 while Voluntary Action Barra & Vatersay has pulled in more than £24,300, as of last night.
Family friend Angus MacNeil said: “I know Laura’s family are not thinking about that just now and would probably blush a bit, but there is the cost of distance and the money raised so far has been amazing.”
Mr MacNeil also said that the families have received an anonymous £5,000 donation from someone in the island of Lewis, for which they are very grateful.
Donald Manford, Eilidh’s great uncle, said he had “no words” to describe the level of support they have received.
Mr MacNeil said that the plan is for any funds leftover to go into the general funding pot for helping all of the victims’ families.
