A disused mortuary building in Fort William could be transformed into an art studio.
The revamped building at Glen Nevis would include an art gallery which would exhibit work by local artists and craftspeople.
There would also be a small retail space, according to plans lodged with the local authority.
Gywn Moses, who runs Gallery in the Fort in Fort William High Street, submitted the change of use application to the Highland Council’s planning department.
He said: “We bought the building from Highland Council two years ago. The mortuary had been lying empty for a while so we cleared it out and knocked down an internal wall. We’ve also insulated the building, put down a new floor and painted the ceiling.
“We’ve called it Gallery in the Glen and once the planning permission comes through, we would be able to open very soon afterwards.”
Mr Moses explained that local artist, Lindsay Jarrett, would be using the studio to paint, while various other artwork would be displayed in the gallery.
“We would be selling art from there and also things like soft drinks as the building is near the West Highland Way which is always very busy with walkers.
“There is not a lot of space for parking at the site, but there is a layby and it is also near the Braveheart car park at Glen Nevis.”
The local authority’s transport planning team has asked for more roads-related information on the application to be provided including access to the site from Glen Nevis Road and where trees or vegetation have to be altered to provide appropriate visibility.
It has also asked for information on the accident history in Glen Nevis Road near to the former mortuary building.
The plans are due to be determined by the local planning authority in the coming months.
