An ambulance was left hanging over the edge of a narrow bridge ‘like something out of The Italian Job’ after crashing while responding to a 999 call in the Highlands.
Shocked eyewitnesses described the scene as reminiscent of the popular Michael Caine film after a Mini Countryman collided with the emergency vehicle on a bridge in Glenborrodale.
The incident forced the ambulance up onto side of the bridge, with one wheel of the four-tonne vehicle dangling over a 10ft drop.
Local resident Geoffrey Campbell said it reminded him of a scene in the legendary movie in which the robbers’ getaway vehicle is left dangling over a cliff.
Mr Campbell, from Kilchoan, said: “The ambulance was heading to Kilchoan to attend an emergency and met a car on the bridge.
“Fortunately no one was injured but the Mini was shunted backwards through the bridge wall and the ambulance ended up balanced on the other wall in an ‘Italian Job’ pose.
“Emergency services soon attended including two fire engines, another ambulance and the police; only the coastguard was missing.
“All was put right with assistance from the Loch Shiel Garage and Ardnamurchan Estate.”
Nobody is believed to have been hurt during the incident on the B8007 road and a medevac helicopter was scrambled to attend the original emergency as the route was shut for over two hours.
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “An incident involved one of our ambulances and another vehicle on the B8007 near Glenborrodale at approximately 6.40 pm on Tuesday evening.
“The ambulance was responding to an emergency call when the incident took place and another resource was immediately sent to the patient’s home address in Kilchoan.
“One patient was transferred safely from there to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by our helimed air ambulance.
“There was no reported adverse impact on the patient.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two appliances attended and crews ensured the area was made safe.”
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed that they were made aware of the crash.
She said: “The incident involved a white mini and a Scottish Ambulance Service vehicle.
“No one was injured as a result of the collision. The road was closed for an hour and a half to allow for vehicle recovery.”
