Campaigners fighting to save Mull’s only sheltered housing accommodation are asking a health and social care partnership to suspend a budget cut.
Trust Housing Association, which operates the Glen Iosal complex in Tobermory, is having £20,000 from Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) withdrawn.
It has told residents of the 25 flats it has no choice but to re-brand Glen Iosal as a retirement home for the more able.
The warden service will no longer be available at certain times.
Katharine Elwis, vice chairwoman of the Save Glen Iosal steering committee, said they have written to HSCP board members calling for the cut to be halted.
The group has also written to Trust Housing and is asking that all parties work together to find a solution.
Mrs Elwis said: “They are proposing to make this cut, which would be devastating, for such a little amount of money.
“We want them to suspend the decision until a thorough impact assessment has been carried out. Not just a financial assessment, an assessment on the impact on the health and well-being of the residents.
“If Glen Iosal is not sheltered accommodation we are going to have to send our loved ones off the island.
“It is going to have a huge impact. Families will either have to move away or we have got the heartbreak of not being able to see our loved ones. The whole thing is inhumane.”
Rhona McLeod, Trust Housing chief executive, said: “At our board meeting in August we will discuss the issues raised by the Save Glen Iosal steering committee. We welcome the chance to meet collaboratively with all relevant parties and a final decision will not be made until after these meetings.”
A spokesman for the HSCP said: “Discussions with Trust Housing and the residents are ongoing.”
