A man who died after falling almost 100 feet from a track in Glencoe was wearing running gear.

The 54 year-old appeared to have slipped on a mountain path on Wednesday afternoon near to a popular film location site.

The man has not yet been named by police, but a spokesman said yesterday that his next of kin have been informed.

Emergency services were called to the area near the Clachaig Inn at 1.19 pm.

Nine members of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team set off to the scene after witnesses to the tragedy raised the alarm.

Deputy leader, Brian Bathurst, said the man had fallen between 66-98 feet.

He added:  “We managed to locate him quite quickly. It looked like he was a fell runner and that he had slipped on the path.  He was wearing running gear.

“The conditions were quite windy and the search and rescue helicopter wasn’t able to get near enough, so we recovered the body and took it back down. The police took over then.

“It was very sad.”

The police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a man died in the Glencoe area on Wednesday afternoon.

“He is not from the Highlands and his next of kin have been informed.

“Enquiries are ongoing, but this does not appear to be suspicious.

“A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal as is standard in these cases.”

The incident happened near Clachaig Gully where scenes for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azhkaban – the third in the popular  series were filmed back in 2003.

The website, UK Climbing.com describes the gully as “1,706 feet of classic wet rock, waterfalls, blank walls and a hair-raising descent.”

It was the second call-out in as many days for members of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team.

On Tuesday, they went to the aid of a walker who suffered cuts and bruises after falling near Ballachulish. It is believed he was later released after treatment from the Belford Hospital in Fort William.
