A 72 year-old volunteer collects around four bags of rubbish every week from a car park in Fort William.
James Kennedy, a member of the local Town Team, visits the Backlands car park behind the High Street almost every day in order to keep it clear of litter.
He even buys black plastic bin bags himself and, despite a large green bin and plenty of notices asking people to take their litter home, he still finds loads of rubbish to pick up.
Mr Kennedy said: “The Town Team became involved to keep the car park tidy as it is not owned by Highland Council.
“No-one is very sure who owns it, but it is used a lot by both local people, visitors and those staying in the Travelodge just behind it.
“A lot of work has gone into making it look better. The local sawmill gave us some wood, uprights and rails and I built the fence at the back of the car park.
“I also put up the litter signs myself.
“It makes me so mad to see the mess people leave behind when there is no need for it.
“Every week I have to take at least four bags of rubbish from here to the dump.”
He added: “This is a great car park and it’s a shame that some people spoil it.”
Mr Kennedy is also on the committee of the Fort William Marina and Shoreline Company and goes down to the town’s West End car park regularly to open the gates leading to the pontoons.
He said: “Some days the rubbish left there is just unbelievable.
“Some of those in camper vans just dump their rubbish in the car park and if it’s windy, it blows right on to our gates.
“People don’t seem to respect their surroundings any more.”
Rubbish in Fort William High Street is also causing concern with litter bins full and overflowing right down its length, particularly in the afternoons.
Drew Purdon, a local shopkeeper and chairman of the town’s retail association, said: “The town is really busy just now and the litter bins fill up quickly.
“In the morning it is brilliant as everything is nice and clean, but no-one seems to bother after that. It really is pretty bad.”
A Highland Council spokesperson said: “The council is aware of the issue in the West End car park and a meeting is being held this month to discuss the matter with local councillors.”
Travelodge was also contacted but a spokesman was unavailable for comment.
