Police are investigating after a fire at a derelict house in a Ross-shire village.

Firefighters spent about two hours tackling the flames at the old Corriemount property, formerly owned by local businessman John Forbes, on Corry Road.

A fire service spokeswoman said that the fire was confined to a first floor bedroom.

A police spokesman said: “Police were made aware of a fire at a domestic property on Corry Road in Muir of Ord.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Nobody was injured.

“Police inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should call 101.”

Next door neighbour Gordon Martin, a Free Church of Scotland minister, said that he could “smell the smoke” at the time and went to investigate with his 19-year-old son, Alasdair.

Mr Martin added: “My son went through one of the windows to check for smoke and found smoke upstairs, and there was a lot in the attic as well.

“He said there was a door and that the paint on it was bubbling. He did not open that door but I understand there was a fire inside.”

Mr Martin added that his wife called 999 after they alerted her from the other side of the garden wall.

Two appliances – one each from Inverness and Dingwall – were sent to the property at Corry Road following the 999 call at about 7.45pm on Sunday.

Crews extinguished the flames by 9.40pm.

Firefighters were also kept busy yesterday morning as they battled a fire at a chip shop in Alness.

The fire broke out at The Eating Plaice chip shop in the town’s High Street at about 9.30am.

Two fire appliances from Invergordon went to the scene and extinguished the flames by 11.15am.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “It was a chip shop fire in Alness High Street. It was a chip pan on fire within the shop.

“There were no reports of injuries.”
