The A82 was closed in both directions yesterday for seven hours following a serious road accident at Glencoe.

Emergency services confirmed that a motorcyclist was involved in a collision near the Glencoe Visitor Centre.

The incident happened around 1.30pm and the police, fire and ambulance services were quickly on the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: “We were called to the incident at 1.34pm. It involved a motorcyclist and a crew from the fire station in Kinlochleven were in attendance for about half an hour assisting ambulance staff.”

A spokesman for the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe, added: “I believe there was an accident involving a motorbike and police closed the A82.

“There is another minor road with passing places near us that goes into Glencoe village and lots of motorists were using it.

“But it is very narrow and it was heaving with vehicles. I heard there were one or two minor bumps as a result.

“The police were obviously very busy on the main road, but I didn’t see anyone directing traffic on this minor route.”

Motorists coming into Glencoe village were turned back and told to take a diversion south via Connel on to the A85.

Many took to social media for more information.

One driver said: “We were stuck for an hour and a half coming up to the Glencoe Visitor Centre.

“A man had walked down to try and get some information from the police. When he came back, he said the road would be shut for another three hours, so we turned back to Tyndrum and headed for Oban. We decided we would have something to eat there before heading back up to Fort William.”

Another motorist added: “It’s chaos. The back road via Clachaig is gridlocked.”

A police spokesperson said emergency vehicles attended a road traffic collision south of Glencoe village. The A82 was reopened at around 8.30pm last night.

There was no further information from the emergency services.
