Lights from around 50 torches blazed into the evening sky yesterday as hundreds of people followed the traditional procession ahead of the official opening of the 2017 Royal National Mod Loch Abar.
Led by Lochaber Pipe Band, the procession moved down Fort William’s High Street, watched by thousands of residents as well as visitors.
John Swinney, Scotland’s deputy first minister; Allan Campbell, president of An Comunn Gaidhealach and Ronald Cameron, convener of the Lochaber Mod committee, led the torch-bearers, with the excited crowd in close attendance, across the Parade, over the A82 at Belford Hospital and down past the station to the town’s Nevis Centre where the official ceremony was being held.
One of the torch-bearers, Matilda MacLean, 17, was repeating the experience she enjoyed so much at the 2014 Mod in Inverness.
“It is great fun to be part of the procession,” she said.
Matilda was attending the event with mum, Katie, dad, Murdo and sister, Mairann.
Mrs MacLean added: “We have been at every Mod since Matilda was four. We live in Inverness now but we wouldn’t miss it.”
