A bogus workman has stolen more than £1,000 cash from a pensioner in Conon Bridge.
The resident, who lives in the Conon Bridge area, was offered roof and gutter repairs as part of a supposed council scheme.
But police said the fraudsters made off with a “significant sum of money” when they asked for – and were then given – an upfront cash payment.
The men involved in this scam were using a blue pick-up style van.
Detective Inspector Eddie Ross said: “We do not recommend dealing with cold callers offering building work or maintenance and would certainly warn against handing over money without being completely sure the person you are dealing with is genuine.
“Legitimate workmen would not ask for cash up-front and nor would they put pressure on you to have money to hand before any work was carried out.
“Similarly do not agree to accompany someone to the bank or a cash machine if you are you are put under pressure to hand over money.”
DI Ross advised always asking for identification for anyone who comes to your door but, if still unsure, contact the company they say they work for to check.
If someone is persistent, ask them to call at another time and arrange for a friend or family member to be there.
If you have doubts, call police or trading standards to report any concerns.
Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
