Pupils at a Highland primary school have been praised by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon for their campaign to ban plastic straws from their village.
The SNP leader said youngsters at Ullapool Primary School and Glasgow’s Sunnyside Primary School had “set an example to us all” after launching their “Nae Straw At Aw” bid.
Ms Sturgeon made the remarks during first minister’s questions at Holyrood after local MSP Kate Forbes suggested the pupils had shown more ambition that the UK Government on the pollution issue.
“If Sunnyside Primary School and Ullapool primary school pupils can eliminate plastic straws from an entire village in a matter of months with their ‘Nae Straw At Aw’ campaign, the UK Government’s target of 25 years lacks a bit of urgency,” said Ms Forbes.
The first minister responded: “I commend and congratulate the pupils of Sunnyside Primary School, who have set an example for us all.
“I take the view that we do not have the luxury of 25 years, and neither do our coastal communities such as Ullapool, which are already taking local action.”
