Work on the first phase of a project which will see 600 new homes built between Oban and Dunbeg starts today.
The first phase of the Dunbeg Masterplan will see improvement works on Kirk Road as part of the Dunbeg Corridor Strategic Masterplan, which sets out ambitious plans for sites between Dunbeg and Ganavan.
Councillor Elaine Robertson, chairwoman of the Oban, Lorn and the Isles Area Committee, said: “This is a significant occasion.
“These improvements will make a real difference to the local community, and will enable this very important housing development to be progressed.
“Not only will Kirk Road be widened, but a pavement and street lighting will also be installed. These are things the community have told us are important to them.
“We want to encourage people to live, work and visit this beautiful area and are committed to economic growth that benefits everyone.
“During the works, traffic management will be in place and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst the improvements take place.”
The Dunbeg Corridor Strategic Masterplan is part of Argyll and Bute Council’s Local Development Plan, which outlines major infrastructure proposals for Argyll and Bute for the next five years.
As well as the road improvements, the masterplan includes 600 new homes, retail and commercial development, green spaces, playparks and landscaping.
A total of 300 homes will be built in subsequent phases of work over the next six years subject to full planning consent being given.
The majority of these houses will be affordable including homes for single occupiers.
The masterplan for Dunbeg was endorsed by the council in April last year.
Planning officer David Moore said the homes, being developed by the Link Group, would be available for shared equity, rent and “perhaps mid market rent, to make sure the needs of the community are catered for.”
Phase one will include 300 flats and houses to be completed by 2022.
A further 305 homes will be built in the future as part of a longer-term plan.
The first phase will be accessed from Kirk Road in Dunbeg.
