Fort William Golf Course is one area of land being considered for housing as GFG Alliance prepares to expand in the Lochaber town.
The international company was this week given planning permission to build the UK’s biggest car wheel factory after buying the aluminium plant in the town from Rio Tinto.
The firm is exploring options to provide housing for 400 new employees.
Eric Wallace, a member of Fort William Golf Club, said: “They appeared to the members on Sunday, basically it was about what they are trying to do, building the new factory and trying to build houses.
“They are looking at all areas around Fort William and wondered if there would be any possibility of some of the land that the club has being used for housing at some point in the future. There is nothing definite about how much of the land they would be looking for. Probably the only reason they are thinking about the golf club is because they own the land.”
He continued: “There has been no indication whatsoever of what they want or what they would give in return.
“All we know is that they are looking to build houses in this area because of the factory they are building. They have looked at various sites. They approached the club to see if there was any possibility of ever coming to an agreement that some of the land that we have could be used for building houses on.
“If they have some kind of proposals then members would obviously look at them. If there was any option or proposal, it might be beneficial to the golf club.”
A spokesman for Liberty said: “We wanted to explore the idea a bit more. There is no formal proposal on the table. We are sizing things up and finding out what options there are around the Fort William area in terms of land for housing.
“This is just one of a number of conversations we have been having while looking at finding a solution to the housing challenge that comes with Fort William becoming a thriving industrial centre.
“It is very early days and we don’t yet know if it will come to anything. Nothing would happen without the approval of the committee and membership of the golf course.”
