A motorist has died following a crash on a busy Highland road which left one car blocking a railway line.
The two-car crash happened on the A835 Tore to Ullapool road, between Garve and Tarvie, just after 2pm yesterday.
Police, paramedics and an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene, but it was later confirmed that one person had died. It is not known if there were any other injuries.
Train services were immediately suspended following the crash, with Network Rail officials also in attendance.
The road between Contin and Garve was closed late into the night to allow collision inspectors to examine the scene.
A police spokesman said: “There has been a fatal accident. Inquiries are still ongoing but it’s in the early stages.”
A fire service spokesman said the casualty was in the hands of medics by the time the team arrived from Dingwall and Beauly.
It is understood they were treated at the scene by a doctor but later died as a result of their injuries.
Police closed the road for four miles between Contin and Garve, leading to long tailbacks, with drivers facing a lengthy diversion via the A837 road by Oykel Bridge.
Traffic heading north was turned round at Contin, while motorists heading south were diverted at Gorstan. Many vehicles also parked up in a nearby car park at the Garve Hotel.
Caledonian MacBrayne delayed their only Sunday service to Isle of Lewis due to the delays to allow passengers extra time to arrive.
Last night, Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh councillor Isabelle Campbell said: “It’s very sad that this has happened. It’s a tragedy. My heartfelt condolences go out to their next of kin.”
