Lib Dem Denis Rixson has been elected as the Highlands’ newest councillor.
The by-election for the Caol and Mallag ward took place following the death of SNP councillor Billy MacLachlan earlier this year.
Following the count, which took place this morning at Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar, Cllr Rixson said: “I would like to thank all the candidates for a respectful campaign, the Highland Council staff for efficiently running the count and I now look forward to working for everyone in the ward.”
He joins councillors Allan Henderson (Independent) and Ben Thompson (Independent) in representing the ward.
There was a 30.1% voter turnout for the ward. Cllr Rixson won 658 first preference votes and 968 votes in total by stage 5 of the single transferable vote system.
The SNP’s Alex MacInnes finished in second place in the vote out of six candidates.
