The body of a hillwalker who was missing in Lochaber has been found following searches of the Knoydart area, police have confirmed.

The family of Ian Stalker, 65, from Edinburgh has been informed.

He was reported overdue on Wednesday from a walk in the area the previous day.

Mr Stalker failed to return home from his trek in the Sgurr a Choire-bheithe area of Knoydart and a major search was launched.

The body was recovered during searches by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Helicopter Rescue 951 and personnel from Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team.

Sergeant Keith Almond said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this time.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

John Stevenson, leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said the casualty was spotted by the helicopter south of Barrisdale Bay in Loch Houron.

Mr Stevenson said: “It’s a huge area, we weren’t sure exactly where he was. It was literally 10s of square miles to search, it was a good spot by the helicopter.

“Some of our team went and assisted with the recovery of the casualty.

“We are not sure what happened yet, we will have to wait for the results of the post mortem.”

In a separate incident, a man died after falling from a cliff at Loch Scavaig on the isle of Skye on Wednesday.

The man, who hasn’t been named, was walking in the Elgol area when he fell down the steep drop.

He was picked up by Mallaig Lifeboat and transferred to Elgol Pier in the afternoon but later died. It is understood he was not from the Highlands.

The Maritime Coastguard Agency received the distress call at noon to reports of a man at the bottom of a cliff.

A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a man has died after falling while walking in the Elgol area of the isle of Skye.

“His next of kin are aware. Emergency services attended in the Camasunary Bay area after the incident was reported shorty before midday on Wednesday May 30.”
