A 79-year-old man was taken to hospital by his daughter yesterday after suffering burns from a wildfire on the Isle of Lewis.
A fire service spokeswoman said the man suffered superficial burns to his right arm and hand as crew battled the fire on the edge of Stornoway.
The spokeswoman said that the flames broke out on moorland behind Oliver’s Brae at about 1.15pm, before spreading towards the shore near Sandwick cemetery and Seaforth Road.
There were no details provided on how the man was injured.
His condition in the Western Isles Hospital has been described as “stable.”
The spokeswoman said firefighters managed to extinguish the wildlifre after an hour using hose reel jets.
It comes after wildfires ravaged other parts of the Highlands and Islands in recent days.
A 49-year-old man has been reported in connection with a wildfire on Skye on Sunday. Police Scotland said the man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal in relation to a blaze near Sligachan, which was finally brought under control after 12 hours.
Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of all the recent wildfires in the region.
Inspector Lynda Allan urged people to enjoy the fine recent weather but to take care when discarding cigarettes or using naked flames amid the extremely dry conditions. Anyone found to be responsible will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
