A casualty was airlifted to hospital last night following a head-on collision on the A9 at Dalwhinnie.
The road was closed for hours and diversions put in place as emergency services worked and investigations took place.
Paramedics and police were on the scene of the crash, one mile north of the Dalwhinnie junction, within minutes.
They found one casualty trapped within her badly damaged vehicle.
Medical teams monitored their condition while firefighters worked to free them from the wreckage using hydraulic cutting equipment.
An air ambulance was soon touching down nearby and, once freed, the casualty was being flown to hospital.
Last night the nature of their injuries was not known.
It is understood a 4×4 and a car were involved in a head-on collision on the A9 shortly before 5.30pm.
Fire appliances from Aviemore, Kingussie and Newtonmore were all sent to the crash site.
The firefighters were stood down at 6.55pm but the road remained closed in both directions for hours.
Police said last night they expected it would be midnight at the earliest before traffic could progress once more.
Diversions were put in place to allow traffic to keep moving, though delays were experienced.
