A body recovered from the shadow of the UK’s highest mountain is believed to be that of a missing David Munro.
The 74-year-old has been missing in Glen Nevis in Lochaber for a year.
Police launched an appeal in August last year after he had not been seen for a number weeks and was not in any of his usual camping spots.
He usually wore green waterproof clothing and wellington boots and camped with two tents.
Police said that at around 2pm on Saturday officers went to Glen Nevis in Lochaber following reports a body had been discovered.
John Stevenson, leader of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, said a team member was on a routine search for Mr Munro when he found a tent.
He said: “He was searching up a burn off the River Nevis – about half way up the glen – when he came across the tent.
“He informed the police that a body was inside. Mr Munro was very well-known in the area and used to stay up and down the glen.”
Police are now trying to officially identify the badly decomposed body.
A spokesman said “Police Scotland Officers and local mountain rescue team recovered the deceased from Glen Nevis and inquiries are ongoing to establish the identity of the individual.”
Last month a Lochaber team member located the body of the climber who went missing in January this year.
The remains of 36-year-old Marcin Bialas had lain under 17ft of snow for almost six months.
Polish hiker Mr Bialas is believed to have fallen 1,600ft to his death after friends reported him missing on January 21.
