A community garden in Gairloch that featured on the Beechgrove Garden has been enhanced by the addition of an old and no longer seaworthy boat.
The Gairloch Wildlife Observation Garden area – known locally as the “Sitooterie” – on Pier Road has become a focal point in the Wester Ross village after its creation a couple of years ago.
Previously it had just been an area of overgrown gorse bushes that obscured some of the beautiful views. But after the local community got involved it was turned into a wildlife observation area.
Now the Sitooterie, which overlooks the sea, appropriately has its own boat after South Erradale resident Lennie Campbell donated it.
But it fell to another local man Johnny Urquhart to take on the project of restoring the boat, converting the stern into a bench and creating a planting area in the hull.
He also added wooden gunwale rails along with other features to create an impressive and attractive addition to the garden.
Taking inspiration from the garden’s own name, the vessel has been named the Boatooterie and has been planted by Gairloch couple Paul and Fran Harvey.
The Sitooterie co-ordinator David Carruthers said he was truly delighted with the result and marvels at the speed of the work done on the boat.
He added: “I have been overwhelmed by everyone’s efforts. Johnny has miraculously transformed this boat from nigh on a wreck to its present superb restoration, all in just a few days.”
