A Highland teenager is hoping to follow in the footsteps of female racing driver Susie Wolff and make it to Formula 1.
Abbie Munro, 16, of Bonar Bridge in Sutherland, has already notched up dozens of karting wins and is ready to make the progression to race single seater F4s. They are the first step on the road to F1.
The fifth year Dornoch Academy pupil has enjoyed two test runs on the F4s at Anglesey in Wales and Croft in England, reaching speeds of 130mph.
Abbie said: “F4 is just a natural progression from karting. I have had two tests in them so far. It felt so good. It was really good fun.
“Susie Wolff is great. She is starting doing some managing I heard. When she tested in Formula 1 it was a really good step for women in motor sport in general.
“She definitely influenced me. When she was testing was when I was starting out and thinking about motor sport as a career. She was someone I looked at and thought, I could do that too.
“I would love to have a turn at Formula 1, that’s where I’m hoping to end up, but racing in general.”
During her karting career Abbie has secured 77 podium finishes including 35 race wins. In addition to the three Scottish Championships won over two different classes, Abbie has also secured numerous club championships including overall club champion at North of Scotland Kart club four years running.
She is a member of the Young Racing Drivers Academy (YRDA) which identifies, mentors and coaches young talent and provides a pathway from karting into single-seater racing.
Her mum Mairi Mackenzie said: “We have funded her up until now but the F4s are totally out of our budget. We are looking for people to help us. It would be a call to any Scottish business person who wants to be involved with a Scottish lassie who wants to make it to the top of her career.
“If we could get someone who wanted to help out for a test session or a round of the championship or just anything really it would be great.”
