A community has raised more than £33,000 for the family of a Skye man who died following a crash on the island.

Ewen Mackay, from the Teangue area, died after his Ford Transit Connect van was involved in a four-vehicle crash on the A87 about a mile north of Sligachan Hotel last week.

The 54-year-old’s family described him as a “devoted husband, father and friend.”

Mr Mackay’s 16-year-old son was a passenger and suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted from the scene by air ambulance and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community.

And the community of Sleat has now set up a JustGiving page online to support his widow, Marion, and the family following the tragedy.

The fundraising target was initially set at £5,000 – but has already soared to more than £33,400.

A white Audi Q7, a blue Mercedes C-class and a silver Vauxhall van were also involved in the collision on Wednesday.

Three fire appliances from Broadford, Portree and Dunvegan attended after receiving the call at 8.50am.

Three ambulances were also in attendance alongside two air ambulances to help transfer  injured casualties for further medical attention.

The crash happened as many islanders and visitors travelled to celebrate the annual Highland Games in Portree, typically Skye’s busiest day of the year.
