A teenage girl whose disappearance sparked a huge search on the Isle of Lewis has been found dead this evening.
Hannah Mackenzie, 17, was reported missing in Stornoway on Thursday evening following the first day back at school after the summer holidays on the Western Isles.
Police released a statement on social media this evening confirming that she had been found dead.
A spokesman said: “We can confirm that a body has been found in the castle grounds, Stornoway.
“While formal identification has yet to take place, the family of missing person Hannah Mackenzie has been informed.”
Chief Inspector Ian Graham said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time are with all concerned.”
Hannah was last seen yesterday outside the Nicolson Institute School in Stornoway, and had been intending to walk to the Western Isles Hospital.
Searches for the youngster took place throughout today, with members of the public assisting the emergency services, but police confirmed at 8.30pm that efforts to trace her had been halted.
