The rain failed to put a dampener on the annual Glenfinnan Highland Gathering as locals and visitors gathered to celebrate this year’s event on Saturday.
All the activities went ahead as scheduled with attendees taking part in piping, dancing and athletic competitions.
The 72nd Gathering took place on the banks of Loch Sheil in the picturesque Lochaber village, near to the Glenfinnan Monument.
Alistair Gibson, secretary of the Glenfinnan Highland Gathering committee, said: “The gathering this year was a lot better than last year in terms of attendance with around 1,100 people coming.
“All of our events went ahead and they were well supported. We had quite a lot more pipers attend this year than we have seen in previous summers.
“We had the odd shower, but the weather dried up for spells and thankfully it was nothing like the torrential rain we had last year which affected our numbers.
“Everybody was in good spirits and the event was well supported by the local community and foreign visitors to the area who were interested to see what happens at a highland games.”
On Saturday, David Hart placed highest out of competitors in the heavy events, taking the Lang Trophy after winning all seven categories.
Alasdair Davidson ran Mr Hart close, finishing runner-up in six of the events.
Mr Hart also took home the MacMillan and Peto trophies.
Chieftain for 2018 Aonghas Grant said: “It was a great day and everything ran smoothly. The event was well received and I spent most of my time watching the piping which was first class as it always is at the Glenfinnan games.”
Young Archie Clark took first in the Cameron Head Scholarship prize in the piping events, with Laura Smith topping her class in the dancing events to win the MacKellaig Cup and the Mairi Rae Quaich.
The games, which have been running since 1946, are set amid some of the region’s most spectacular scenery and are usually held on the Saturday in August which is closest to the 19th of the month.
This is to commemorate the date of the Jacobite Rising at Glenfinnan.
