Retiming a road closure from daytime to overnight is a battle won, claims the chairman of the influential development committee on Highland Council.
A £860,000 surfacing project at four locations on the A82 near Fort Augustus, was initially due to take place during the day – adding 30 minutes to every journey.
But after a request, led by Councillor Alan Henderson the chairman of the environment, development and infrastructure committee, the work will now take place between 7pm and 6am – rather than the busy route being closed between 8am and 5pm.
Contractors will replace the road surface at four locations between Invergarry and Invermoriston – Netherwood to Ardachy, north of Thistle Stop Café, south of Fort Augustus and Inchnacardoch.
A total of two miles of new surfacing will be completed, with teams carrying out drainage improvements and gully upgrades at some sections of the route to reduce the risk of flooding and standing water on the road, which will improve road safety for motorists.
The road will be closed Sunday to Thursday nights, 7pm to 6am, from Sunday September 30 for up to five weeks.
Traffic will be diverted via the A87 and A887 during the improvements.
