Nicola Sturgeon vows to investigate Orkney ferry concerns

Fresh concerns about disabled access on a temporary replacement ferry to Orkney will be investigated by Nicola Sturgeon.

The SNP leader made the promise after the issue was raised by local Liberal Democrat MSP Liam McArthur yesterday.

In February, Mr McArthur had highlighted the case of a wheelchair user’s inability to access the freight vessel that was used to replace the MV Hamnavoe on the Stromness to Scrabster route.

He raised the issue again at first minister’s questions yesterday after it was confirmed that a freight vessel would again provide relief cover in January.

“Does the first minister believe that the government is fulfilling its responsibilities to my constituents in the delivery of that lifeline ferry service, or does she still deeply regret the standard of service that is being provided during the refit period?” he asked.

Ms Sturgeon responded: “I stand by the answer that I gave to Liam McArthur previously in the chamber.

“Accessibility to public transport and to all public services is extremely important.

“Given that a freight vessel will be used, I will look further into the issue to see what actions are being taken to ensure appropriate accessibility.

“I will ask the minister to write to Liam McArthur once I have had the opportunity to do that.”
