The historic lighthouse at Duncansby Head is in the throes of undergoing a £265,000 upgrade.
The Northern Lighthouse Board is overseeing the work on the light which was one of the last built in 1924 by David Stevenson, a cousin of the author Robert Louis Stevenson.
Contractors are to remove the optic lamp and electrical operating system and install a power-saving LED replacement.
They are also to refurbish the lighthouse tower and adjoining buildings.
The range of the new light, which monitors the eastern approach to the Pentland Firth, will continue to be 22 miles.
The lighthouse, which was strafed by a German bomber during World War Two, was automated in 1997.
